Bonus Episode 135 Attack on the Moncada Barracks

Episode 135 is another Bonus Episode. We cover the infamous story of the failed Attack on the Moncada Barracks. This was the first armed attack led by Fidel Castro against the Batista government after the1952 coup by Batista. The attack failed miserably with 25 people killed in the attack itself and an additional 54 of the revolutionaries summarily rounded up and murdered shortly afterward. Fidel Castro escaped into the mountains but was subsequently apprehended and brought to trial. While he was convicted and sentenced to fifteen years, his eloquent speech now dubbed “history will absolve me” coupled with the brutality of the Batista forces as they dealt with the escaping revolutionaries, combined to turn Castro into a national hero and set the stage for a later toppling of the Batista government. Join us in this continuing miniseries on Cuban history as we continue to set the stage and explore the forces that were shaping the world in that era of the twentieth century. It’s history that immerses us in the Cuban story whose politics, geography, and economic circumstances would all collide and create an epicenter of geopolitical consequences. Consequences that would intersect in a crescendo right at the moment that JFK was coming to the Presidency. Understanding the leadup and history of Cuba is critical to this part of the journey that is JFK the Enduring Secret. The current group of episodes cover Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution. Enjoy! Jeff
