Episode 49 The Umbrella Man

Episode 49 begins to wind down our time in Dealey Plaza with the witnesses there, and our initial journey into the mysterious world of the Grassy Knoll and the idea of a conspiracy. This episode is dedicated to telling the story of the Umbrella Man. He stood dangerously close to the motorcade as the final shots rang out with his large black umbrella fully engaged. And he did it on a day when the misty light rain of the morning had already given way to rain free weather by parade time, So who was this man and why was he displaying that umbrella. Umbrella man did not immediately come forward after the assassination and that allowed all sorts of sinister theories to proliferate in the absence of his identification. Finally, some fifteen years after the assassination, the puzzle is solved. So, let’s here the story of the Umbrella Man.

Thoughts on "Episode 49 The Umbrella Man"

  1. Howard says:

    Jeff,
I thought you may have given the Umbrella Man saga short shrift. I know about Mr Witt but it still strikes me as odd that right after the assassination while everyone is running around, he and the “dark complected man” are just sitting on the curb and then both calmly walk away. Seem strange?
And what of this dark complected man who seems to be waving his arm and may have had a radio in his back pocket?
Am I seeing something more sinister????

    1. Jeff Crudele says:

      Howard,

I agree. Yes I should have mentioned the visual evidence associated with the earpiece. It’s but one more bizarre aspect of this case. The fact that Witt came forward in what was finally a forthright fashion and testified under oath, helps me to get to the conclusion that I did. However, there has not been any other corroborating witnesses that could stand up and identify Witt as being there. It’s his word only and unfortunately the photographic evidence is not corroborating either. One other factor for me is that he did not appear to profit afterward. He did not appear to try to engage in significant commercialization of the story in some big way. At least as far as I can tell. But, still, it is possible that he or one of the others close to him was engaging in something more sinister. In my vernacular the earpiece is still the hanging chad! One more incident where the facts are stranger than fiction.

  2. Howard says:

I have always struggled with the Umbrella Man “confession”.
Is it weird that right after the assassination, while everyone else is running around, he is shown simply sitting on the sidewalk.
And what about the “dark complected man” who joins him and sits down next to him?
Why did he put his arm up in the air?
It didn’t seem like a wave to me.
And did he have a radio in his back pocket?
Am I seeing something sinister when there is nothing there?
